A 9-hole course has been in existence here since the 1920s. This was reconfigured in 1990 by Gary Panks, who also designed an additional nine holes in 2000. This 18-hole Championship course meanders through stands of large Ponderosa pines at an elevation of 7000 ft.

  • GOLF magazine recently named Fort McDowell's Saguaro Course at We-Ko-Pa one of the "Top 10 New Courses You Can Play" in the US.
  • The We-Ko-Pa Golf Club located in the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation is also ranked #38 on GOLF magazine's current list of the "Top 100 Courses You Can Play in the U.S."
  • Early golf courses in Chandler, like the Superstition Links, which opened in 1914, consisted of oiled sand and oatmeal greens, which were later replaced by Bermuda grass and clover.
  • Superstition Links - now known as the San Marcos Golf Course -- was the first grass course in the state.

  • The June 2006 issue of Condé Nast Traveler features the Top 100 golf resorts across six continents. Five Greater Phoenix golf resorts ranked in the top 100, and the Four Seasons Resorts at Troon North ranked fourth in the world for “Best in Food/Dining.” Courses that made the list include The Phoenician, Four Seasons at Troon North, JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort and Spa, Boulders Resort and Golden Door Spa and the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. The Phoenician, as well as the Boulders Resort and Golden Door Spa, have now appeared on the list for 11 consecutive years.

  • The Whirlwind Golf Club at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort & Spa was the first in the world to introduce the Coolwell G2 prototype last summer, which provides a comfortable, climate-controlled golf experience. Now, a more efficient and effective G2 has debuted on Whirlwind’s carts. This patented new device replaces the beverage coolers on golf carts and lowers the temperatures in and around the carts by more than 40 degrees. The system runs off of dry ice, so it lowers the humidity and blows cool, dry air. The system also serves as a heater in cold weather, a sanitary beverage cooler and offers an aromatherapy option. It is offered at no additional charge to guests and dramatically changes the summertime golf experience.
